How to clean fabric dining chairs (and what it costs in LA)

Most fabric dining chair seats can be cleaned at home with a vacuum, a little dish soap and water, and a lot of blotting, as long as the fabric’s care code allows water. Grease, old food stains and delicate fabrics are where home cleaning tends to go wrong. If you would rather hand it off, our dining chair cleaning in Los Angeles starts at $25 per chair.

How do you clean fabric dining chair seats at home?

Start by vacuuming the seat and back with an upholstery brush, paying attention to the seams where crumbs collect. Then check the care code, which is usually on a tag or sticker under the seat. If it says W or WS, mix a few drops of clear dish soap into warm water, dampen a white cloth, and work over the seat in small sections. Blot with a second cloth dampened in plain water to rinse, then press a dry towel into the fabric to pull out as much moisture as you can.

Clean the whole seat panel rather than just the spot. Cleaning one small area often leaves a ring around it when it dries. Use as little water as possible, because the foam under a dining chair seat holds moisture for a long time.

What does the code under my dining chair mean?

W means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent-based cleaning only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only, with no wet cleaning at all. If your chairs say S or X, or there is no tag, skip the soap and water and stick to vacuuming. We explain the same codes for sofas on our couch cleaning page, and they mean the same thing on a dining chair.

What removes food and grease stains from fabric chairs?

Act fast and blot, never rub. For a fresh oily spill such as salad dressing or butter, sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda on it, leave it for 15 to 20 minutes to soak up the oil, then vacuum it off. On W or WS fabric, follow with the dish soap and water method above and rinse well, because soap left in the fabric attracts new dirt.

For sauces, wine and juice, blot up as much as you can with a white cloth, then dab with cool water and a drop of dish soap. Old stains that have been there for months, and grease that has darkened the front edge of the seat, rarely come out completely at home. They can often be improved with professional cleaning, but we won’t promise that every stain will disappear.

Can you remove and wash the seat fabric?

On many dining chairs the seat is a padded board held on by a few screws underneath, so you can take it off and clean it more easily on a table. The fabric is usually stapled to the board, though, so it isn’t meant to come off and go in the washing machine. Washing can shrink the fabric or make the color fade, and then it no longer fits the seat.

If the seat has a zippered cover, check its tag before washing. Even then, washing one cover can leave it looking different from the rest of the set, so wash them all or clean them all the same way.

What should you not use on fabric dining chairs?

Avoid bleach, colored cloths and all-purpose kitchen sprays, which can lighten or stain the fabric. Don’t soak the seat or scrub hard, because that can fuzz the fabric and push the stain into the foam. Handheld steamers and rental machines can leave too much water behind, which can cause brown water rings on linen and cotton.

Test anything new on the underside or the back of the seat first, and let it dry before you judge the result.

How much does dining chair cleaning cost in Los Angeles?

With us, a standard upholstered dining chair is $25 per chair, and a design chair is $49 per chair. Six standard dining chairs come to $150. Every visit has a $129 minimum, and the price is the same anywhere we work in LA.

Basic spot treatment is included. Heavy stain or pet odor treatment is a $40 add-on, and fabric protector is another $40 if you want it. Full details are on our dining chair cleaning page, and the rest of our furniture prices are in upholstery cleaning cost in Los Angeles.

What is the difference between a dining chair and a design chair?

Our published prices have two dining chair options, Dining and Design, and both are priced per chair. If you aren’t sure which one your chairs are, text a photo that shows the seat and back, and we’ll tell you which option applies before you book.

Should I clean my dining chairs before hosting a holiday dinner?

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving or a holiday dinner at home in LA, book the cleaning at least a day before your guests arrive, so the chairs have plenty of time to dry. Dining chairs can be added to the same visit as your couch or area rug, so the $129 minimum only matters once.

After dinner, blot spills as soon as you can, before they set. A fresh spill is far easier to deal with than one found the next morning.

How long until I can use the chairs after cleaning?

Dining chair seats are thinner than sofa cushions, so they usually dry faster than a couch. Most of our visits take around 1 to 2 hours of cleaning, and the drying happens after we leave. Your technician will tell you when the chairs are ready to sit on.

Open a window or run a fan or the air conditioning to help them dry. More tips are in how long a couch takes to dry after cleaning.
