Why does my couch smell like dog?
A couch smells like dog because the fabric slowly collects what your dog leaves behind. Hair, dander, the natural oils on their skin and coat, drool and the dirt on their paws all work into the fibers and the cushions. The smell builds up gradually, which is why you often stop noticing it at home while guests notice it right away.
The places your dog likes best usually smell the strongest. That tends to be one end of the couch, the seat cushion they sleep on and the arm they rest their head on. A wet dog after a bath, a rainy walk or a trip to the beach adds a lot of smell in one go.
How do you get dog smell out of a couch?
Start by removing the buildup. Vacuum the whole couch slowly with an upholstery tool, including the seams, the crevices and under the cushions, then deodorize with baking soda and give the cushions fresh air. Wash only what the care tag allows, and clean the dog’s own bed and blankets at the same time, so they don’t bring the smell straight back.
A rubber glove or a damp rubber brush pulls out embedded hair that a vacuum leaves behind. If you want to spot clean, check the care code first and test any cleaner on a hidden spot, because some fabrics leave rings when they get wet.
Does baking soda get rid of dog smell on a couch?
Baking soda helps with mild, everyday dog smell. Sprinkle a thin layer over dry fabric, leave it for a few hours or overnight, then vacuum it up thoroughly. It absorbs some of the odor from the surface, but it does not remove the oils and dirt that cause it.
Test it on a hidden spot first, especially on dark fabric, and vacuum well so no powder is left in the seams. If the smell is back within a few days, the source is deeper in the fabric or the cushions, and baking soda alone won’t reach it.
How do you get dog smell out of couch cushions?
Take the cushions off, vacuum all sides and stand them up somewhere with good airflow for a few hours. If the covers zip off, wash them only when the care tag allows it, because many covers shrink or fade in a washing machine and may not fit back on.
Never put the foam itself in the washer. If the smell seems to come from inside the cushion, it has usually soaked deeper than the cover, and that is a good time to have the whole couch cleaned rather than just the covers.
Do odor sprays get rid of dog smell on a couch?
Not really. A fabric spray covers the smell for a day or two, but it leaves the hair, oils and dirt behind, so the smell returns. Some sprays also leave a residue that makes the fabric sticky, and sticky fabric attracts dirt faster.
Strong household cleaners and bleach can discolor upholstery, and mixing products is never a good idea. If you have already tried something on the couch, tell your cleaner what it was before they start.
Is it dog smell or dog urine?
General dog smell is musty and spread across the areas your dog uses. Urine smells sharper, often like ammonia, and is usually strongest in one spot. If you are not sure, look at the couch in the dark with a UV flashlight, because old urine often shows up as a glowing patch.
The difference matters, because urine soaks through the fabric into the cushion foam and needs a different approach. Our guide to pet urine and odor on a couch explains what cleaning can and can’t fix there, and if the rug in front of the couch smells too, read how to get pet urine smell out of a rug.
Why does the dog smell come back after cleaning?
The most common reason is simple. Your dog is still using the couch, so the oils and hair start building up again right away. The smell also comes back faster when the cleaning only reached the surface and left the buildup deeper in the cushions.
Damp air makes odors more noticeable. Near the coast in Venice, Santa Monica and the South Bay, humid mornings can make a couch smell stronger and slow down drying after a cleaning. Close to the water, sand also ends up in cushions, so shake out or vacuum loose sand after beach days.
When should you call a professional for dog smell on a couch?
Call a pro when vacuuming, baking soda and airing out haven’t helped, when the smell comes back within days, or when the couch is a fabric you don’t want to risk wetting at home. A professional cleaning rinses and extracts the fabric, which removes much more of the oil and dirt than surface cleaning can.
Pet accidents and pet smells are among the most common things our customers tell us about. At least 90 of our completed jobs since 2024 had pet stains or urine noted in the booking. A professional cleaning can reduce many everyday odors, and we tell you honestly before booking what is realistic for your couch.
What happens when a pro cleans a couch that smells like dog?
We check the care code and the fabric first, then vacuum out dog hair, crumbs and dust, including along the seams and under removable cushions. Spots and the areas your dog uses most, such as arms, headrests and seat fronts, get a suitable treatment, and then we rinse and extract the fabric to lift out what we loosened. For pet odors we add a separate deodorizing treatment to the cleaning.
Most couch cleanings take around 1 to 2 hours, and most couches are dry in about 4 to 8 hours. Thick cushions or a humid day can take until the next morning. Keep your dog off the couch until it is completely dry, and read how long a couch takes to dry for ways to speed it up.
How much does it cost to get dog smell out of a couch in Los Angeles?
With us, a 2-seat sofa starts at $129 and a 3-seat or 4-seat sofa starts at $149. Pet odor treatment is $40 more, so a 3-seat sofa with pet odor treatment comes to $189. Every visit has a $129 minimum, and our prices are the same across Los Angeles.
Sectionals and L-shaped sofas start at $189, and an armchair starts at $69. In West Hollywood, a sofa plus the rug in front of it is the pairing we see most, and both can go on one quote. Every size option is on our couch cleaning page, and big sofas are on the sectional cleaning page.
How do you keep a couch from smelling like dog?
Put a washable throw or blanket where your dog likes to lie, and wash it every week or two. Vacuum the couch weekly, brush your dog regularly and wipe their paws after walks, especially after the beach or the dog park. Dry your dog well before they jump back on the couch after a bath or a rainy walk.
Keep the room aired out, too. Open windows on dry days or run a fan, because moving air keeps odors from settling into the fabric. Many vintage and mid-century sofas in Silver Lake and Los Feliz have no care tag, so if yours is one of them, send us a photo before you try any wet cleaning.
