How to get urine out of a mattress (and old sweat stains)

To get urine out of a mattress, blot up as much as you can right away, rinse the spot with a little cool water, treat it with a cleaner made for urine, then sprinkle baking soda over the damp area and vacuum it once it is completely dry. Use as little liquid as you can, because a mattress soaks up anything you pour on it, and keep heat away from the spot. Old, dried or repeated accidents are much harder to fix at home. If you would rather hand it off, our mattress cleaning in Los Angeles starts at $99, and heavy stain or pet odor treatment is $40 more.

How do you get urine out of a mattress?

Strip the bed and press a thick stack of paper towels or a white towel into the wet spot, swapping in dry ones until they come up barely damp. Dab on a little cool water and blot it out again, then treat the spot with a cleaner made for urine and follow its label. Let the mattress dry completely with a fan or an open window before you put clean sheets back on.

Spray or dab, never pour. A mattress is thick foam and padding, and every bit of liquid you add goes deeper and takes longer to dry. Wash the sheets, the mattress pad and any topper separately, following their care labels.

How do you get pee out of a mattress when it is dry?

A dried pee stain has to be dampened before it can be treated. Mist the spot lightly with cool water, blot it, and repeat a few times to draw out what you can. Then use a urine cleaner and let it sit as long as its label says before you blot it.

Expect a dried stain to improve rather than vanish. By the time it has dried, the urine has usually gone into the layers under the cover, and cleaning the surface does not reach all of it.

How do you get pee smell out of a mattress?

Treat the urine itself, not just the smell. Once the spot has been rinsed and treated, sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda over the damp area, leave it until it is completely dry, ideally overnight, and vacuum it up. Air fresheners and scented sprays only cover the smell for a day or two.

If the smell keeps coming back, the urine has reached the foam underneath. In Los Angeles you often notice that on humid days, and near the coast in the South Bay, marine-layer mornings can make an old spot smell stronger. Our pet urine and odor guide explains why.

Does hydrogen peroxide or baking soda get urine out of a mattress?

They can help with a small, fresh accident, but they rarely fix an old one. Baking soda soaks up some of the odor as the spot dries. Hydrogen peroxide can lighten a stain, but it can also lighten the fabric, so test it on a hidden part of the mattress cover first.

Don’t mix cleaning products on the same spot, and dab on a little plain water between them. Leftover cleaner leaves the spot sticky, and a sticky spot picks up new dirt.

Can old urine stains be removed from a mattress?

Often they can be improved, but we won’t promise they will disappear. A mattress absorbs urine deeply, and older or repeated accidents are harder to improve than fresh ones. Earlier home treatments can also spread a stain or set it.

If an old stain is what bothers you, send us a photo before you try anything else on it. We tell you honestly what to expect before you book, not after.

How do you get yellow sweat stains out of a mattress?

Yellow sweat stains build up slowly, so they take patience. Dab the area with a mild mix of dish soap and cool water, blot it, dab on plain water and blot again, then let it dry fully with a fan. Repeat it a few times rather than soaking the mattress once.

Brown or very old yellow marks often only partly improve, at home or with a professional cleaning. A washable mattress protector is the easiest way to keep new ones from forming.

Is a mattress ruined if a dog or a kid peed on it?

Usually not. A single accident that was blotted quickly often comes out well, and pet accidents are one of the most common things our customers tell us about. The ones that are hard to save are old spots that were left to dry and the same spot used again and again.

Keep your dog off the bed until the spot is clean and dry, because dogs tend to go back to a place that still smells like urine. For a toddler or a child who is still learning, a waterproof mattress protector saves a lot of late-night scrubbing.

Can you steam clean urine out of a mattress?

We don’t recommend steam or any other heat on urine. Heat from a steamer, an iron or a hair dryer can set urine smell into the fibers, which makes it harder to remove later.

Steamers and rented machines also tend to leave a lot of water in a mattress. Cool water, light blotting and plenty of airflow are safer at home.

When should you call a professional mattress cleaner?

Call for help when the smell keeps coming back, when there are several spots, when the stain is old or has been used again, or when you are worried about soaking a memory foam mattress. Those are the cases where home cleaning tends to spread the stain or leave too much water behind.

We clean mattresses at your place, so nothing has to be carried out. Tell us about stairs, elevators and parking when you book, because older walk-up buildings in Hollywood and similar parts of LA can affect how we get to you.

How much does mattress urine cleaning cost in Los Angeles?

With us, a twin or double mattress starts at $99 and a queen, king or California king at $119. Heavy stain or pet odor treatment is $40 more, so a queen with urine treatment comes to $159, and every visit has a $149 minimum. Our mattress cleaning cost guide has every size.

When can you sleep on a mattress after cleaning urine out of it?

Only once it is dry all the way through, not just on the surface. After a home treatment, how long that takes depends on how much liquid went in and how much air moves through the room, so press a dry paper towel firmly into the spot to check before you make the bed.

After a professional cleaning, drying depends on the mattress material, the treatment and the airflow, so we don’t give one fixed time for every bed. Your technician tells you before leaving when your mattress should be ready to sleep on.
