How often should you clean your couch?
Think of it in three layers. Vacuum the couch about once a week, deal with spills and spots as they happen, and give the whole couch a deep clean about once every year or two. Most couches get dirty slowly, so a weekly vacuum does more to keep them looking good than any single big cleaning.
Many of our customers book when the fabric looks dull or stained, after an accident, before guests arrive or when they are moving. That is a perfectly good way to decide, and it is usually more useful than a date on a calendar.
How often should a couch be professionally cleaned?
For a couch in normal use, the rule of thumb you will see most often is a professional cleaning every 12 to 24 months. A couch in a formal room that rarely gets used can go longer, and the family room couch where everyone eats and watches TV usually needs it sooner.
A professional cleaning rinses and extracts the fabric, which removes much more of the body oils and dirt than surface cleaning can. Most couch cleanings take around 1 to 2 hours, and most couches are dry in about 4 to 8 hours.
How often should you deep clean your couch if you have pets or kids?
With pets on the furniture or young children in the house, plan on a deep clean closer to every 6 to 12 months. Hair, paws, drool, snacks and sticky hands build up fast, and accidents can soak past the fabric into the cushion foam.
Pet accidents are among the most common things our customers tell us about. At least 90 of our completed jobs since 2024 had pet stains or urine noted in the booking. If your couch smells like your dog rather than looking dirty, read how to get dog smell out of a couch, and for urine see our pet urine and odor guide.
How often should you vacuum your couch?
About once a week is a good starting point, and more often if a pet sleeps on it. Use the upholstery tool, go slowly, and get into the seams, along the arms and under the seat cushions, where crumbs and grit collect.
Dry grit is what wears fabric down, because it rubs against the fibers every time someone sits. Removing it every week keeps the fabric from looking tired early and makes the next deep clean easier.
How often should you clean your couch cushions and covers?
Take the seat cushions off and vacuum all sides every few weeks, and flip or rotate them so they wear and soil evenly. Throws and blankets that live on the couch can go in the wash every week or two, especially if a pet uses them.
Wash removable cushion covers only when the care tag allows it, because many shrink or fade in a washing machine and may not fit back on. Never put the foam itself in the washer. If a cover comes out of the wash brighter than the rest of the couch, the difference can show, which is one reason people clean the whole couch at once.
How do you know your couch needs cleaning?
The clearest signs are darker patches on the arms, headrests and seat fronts, fabric that feels slightly greasy or stiff, a smell when you sit down, and spots that keep spreading when you try to clean them. If you have to turn a cushion over to hide something, it is probably time.
Arms and headrests usually go first because they collect skin and hair oils. Even performance fabrics still collect body oils there, so an easy-care fabric does not mean the couch never needs a deep clean.
Does LA dust and weather change how often you should clean your couch?
It can. In fall, dry Santa Ana wind days push fine dust into homes, especially with the windows open, and it settles into fabric along with everything else. A couch near an open window or a patio door can look dull faster in those weeks, so a few extra vacuums help.
Near the coast in Venice, Santa Monica and the South Bay, the humid marine layer can make odors more noticeable and slows drying after any wet cleaning. Close to the beach, sand also ends up in the cushions, so shake them out or vacuum after beach days.
How often should you clean a white couch?
A white or cream couch shows dirt sooner, so it usually needs vacuuming and spot care more often, and many owners deep clean it closer to once a year. Blot fresh spills with a clean white cloth and skip scrubbing and household sprays, which can set stains or leave rings on light fabric.
We clean white and cream sofas often. At least 16 of our completed jobs since 2025 had a white or cream sofa, sectional or chair noted in the booking, and our white couch cleaning guide explains what usually comes out and what may not.
Can you clean your couch too often?
Vacuuming often is fine. Wet cleaning is different: soaking a couch over and over, or using too much cleaner, can leave rings, a sticky residue that attracts dirt, or cushions that stay damp. For most homes, a professional cleaning once or twice a year is plenty, with gentle spot care in between.
Always check the care code first. W means water-based cleaning is fine, S means solvent only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only. If the tag says S or X, or there is no tag, don’t use water on it at home.
What should you do between couch cleanings?
Vacuum weekly, blot spills the moment they happen, and put a washable throw where your pet or the kids sit most. Wipe paws after walks, keep food spills off the arms where you can, and open windows or run a fan on dry days so the fabric airs out.
A fabric protector can make the next spill easier to blot up. We add it for $40 after a cleaning, but it does not make a couch stain-proof.
